Mark Poprawski

For Mark Poprawski, who is creating some intensely dark and dramatic seascapes, the horizon is an infinite space most perfectly described by the apparent meeting of sea and sky. It is a point at which our eye can rest, away from the more immediate conflict between ordered land and chaotic sky.

Often though, the horizon is indistinct or even entirely lost, drawing our eye into and through the scene as our logical mind attempts to find it, but the light which radiates from even the darkest skies acts as uplifting counterpoint.

Born in 1972, many of Mark’s most vivid childhood memories were formed during his annual visits to the Cornish coast. He studied painting at Norwich School of Art and Design. His work has very much been influenced through travel and having lived for three years amongst the dramatic landscapes of the Limousin region of France, where he opened a gallery exhibiting his own pictures.

He now lives in St Ives, Cornwall, where he continues to be inspired by his immediate  surroundings, painting from his studio on a full time basis.
